A safe setup is boring: stable surface, fresh air, no sleeping next to the printer, no clutter around hot parts, and a habit of checking prints without hovering.
The setup checklist
Location: choose a utility area, workshop, garage, or dedicated room before buying.
Ventilation: fresh air in, contaminated air diluted or exhausted, door closed from occupied space when practical.
Filament: begin with PLA from a reputable brand. Store it dry and labeled.
Monitoring: check the first layer in person, then monitor remotely or periodically.
Fire basics: use a sound outlet, keep flammables away, and do not run a new printer unattended overnight.
Cleanup: collect scraps, avoid sanding indoors without dust control, and wash hands after handling printed parts.
Good first location
Ventilated workshop table, clear surroundings, stable power, room you can close off.
Bad first location
Bedroom desk, cramped shelf, carpeted corner, shared work area where people sit for hours.
Do not overfit safety to PLA
PLA is the beginner default because it prints easily, not because heated plastic has no exposure concerns. Good habits should survive your second material.
