3D Printer Buyer Checklist

Use this before comparing models. Updated July 31, 2026.

The five gates

  1. Use case: repairs, prototypes, tabletop, decor, enclosures, brackets, gifts, or learning CAD?
  2. Space: where will it live, how loud can it be, and can you ventilate that area?
  3. Material: start with PLA; add PETG when you need more heat resistance or toughness.
  4. Support: do you want appliance-like convenience, repairable documentation, or budget tinkering?
  5. Total cost: printer, filament, spare nozzles, build plate, tools, dry storage, ventilation or filtration.

Beginner printer types

Open FDM printer

Good for PLA/PETG in a ventilated, non-bedroom space. Cheaper and easier to inspect. Not ideal for ABS/ASA.

Enclosed FDM printer

Better containment, steadier temperatures, and a clearer path to tougher materials. Costs more and still needs ventilation thinking.
