3D Printer Buyer Checklist
Use this before comparing models. Updated July 31, 2026.
The five gates
- Use case: repairs, prototypes, tabletop, decor, enclosures, brackets, gifts, or learning CAD?
- Space: where will it live, how loud can it be, and can you ventilate that area?
- Material: start with PLA; add PETG when you need more heat resistance or toughness.
- Support: do you want appliance-like convenience, repairable documentation, or budget tinkering?
- Total cost: printer, filament, spare nozzles, build plate, tools, dry storage, ventilation or filtration.
Beginner printer types
Open FDM printer
Good for PLA/PETG in a ventilated, non-bedroom space. Cheaper and easier to inspect. Not ideal for ABS/ASA.
Enclosed FDM printer
Better containment, steadier temperatures, and a clearer path to tougher materials. Costs more and still needs ventilation thinking.
Current comparison anchors
- Bambu A1 mini: small, automated, low-friction starter. Official build volume: 180 x 180 x 180 mm.
- Bambu A1: similar beginner convenience with larger 256 x 256 x 256 mm build volume.
- Prusa MINI+: compact, documented, repairable, strong support ecosystem.
- Creality Ender-3 V3 SE/KE/V3: lower entry price, more tolerance for tinkering and self-support required.
Safety default
Do not buy until you can name where the printer will sit, how fresh air reaches that area, and how you will avoid hovering over long prints.
